What is deep tissue massage?

The intention in deep tissue massage is to reach the deeper layers of tissue and in general (not always) is used to target specific areas of complaint. This requires a very slow and engaged touch, and it takes time to prepare the body for this kind of work. Your therapist should always warm the tissue with superficial work before using deep tissue techniques. Many massage therapists sprinkle deep tissue techniques throughout your massage when they deem it necessary. It doesn’t have to be delivered with firm pressure - but often is.

As a rule of thumb, I only go as deep as your body tell me is appropriate. If I feel any holding, bracing or pushback from your tissue, I see it as a sign that the pressure isn’t productive.

Always feel free to tell your massage therapist when you want a change in pressure.
